SUMMARYThis is a preliminary report, exploring the relationship between cerebral metabolic activity (represented by its oxygen consumption) and the clinical signs in 9 comatose patients suffering from different kinds of brain damage. It was found that, when cerebral oxygen consumption reaches levels below one-third of the normal values, clinical signs indicating brain death are manifest.

Dr. Shalit's address is Department of Neurosurgery, Hadassah University Hospital, P.O.B. 499, Jerusalem, Israel.

Supported in part by a grant from the Joint Research Fund, The Hebrew University–Hadassah Medical School, Jerusalem, Israel
