Rectal Valproate syrup and status epilepticus

Michael J. Thorpy, M. B., Ch.B.

Neurology Department, Upstate Medical Center, Syracuse, NY.

In one patient, status epilepticus did not respond to commonly used anticonvulsants but was completely controlled by sodium valproate syrup given rectally. Rectal use of valproate syrup may obviate the need for assisted respiration.

Address correspondence and reprint requests to Dr. Thorpy, Neuroendocrine Fellow, Department of Neurology, Montefiore Hospital and Medical Center, 111 East 210th Street, Bronx, NY 10467.

Accepted for publication January 18, 1980.
