Partial pontine hematomas

Carlos S. Kase, M.D., Gilbert O. Maulsby, M.D. and J. P. Mohr, M.D.

Departments of Neurology (Drs. Kase and Mohr) and Radiology (Dr. Maulsby), University of South Alabama, Mobile, AL.

Two hypertensive men presented clinically with small, largely unilateral hematomas of the pons and midbrain demonstrated by computerized tomography. Clinical manifestations included "ocular bobbing," complex forms of ophthalmoplegia, Cheyne-Stokes respiration, and pyramidal tract signs. The "typical" signs of massive pontine hemorrhage—including coma, pinpoint pupils, and hyperthermia—were absent.

Accepted for publication September 25, 1979.
