The learning needs of the professional

Alma C. Yearwood, R.N., M.S.

National Multiple Sclerosis Society, New York, NY.

Address correspondence and reprint requests to Ms. Yearwood, Educational Programs Associate, National Multiple Sclerosis Society, 205 East 42 Street, New York, NY 10017.

The learning needs of the professional in caring for the multiple sclerosis (MS) patient are presented in five categories. The professional needs to know about: the patient, the disease, the other members of the health care team, the patient's supportive network, and the available community resources.

A model of patient adjustment to MS is reviewed, and a rationale for the team approach to the care of the MS patient is considered. The concept of care is then expanded to include the role of the family and self-help groups.

Accepted for publication September 15, 1979.
