Abnormalities of erythrocyte membranes in myotonic muscular dystrophy manifested in lipid vesicles

Yasuho Nagano, M. D. and Allen D. Roses, M. D.

From the Departments of Medicine (Neurology) (Drs. Nagano and Roses) and Biochemistry (Dr. Roses), Howard Hughes Medical Institute, Duke University Medical Center, Durham, NC.

Sodium flux was investigated in lipid vesicles derived from erythrocyte membranes of patients with myotonic dystrophy (MyD) and matched healthy controls. The lipid vesicles were prepared with phospholipid from erythrocyte membranes and "spectrin" protein preparations. Abnormal sodium permeability was demonstrated in vesicles prepared from phospholipid from the MyD patients.
