Plasmapheresis and acute Guillain-Barre syndrome

The Guillain-Barré Syndrome Study Group*

*The participants in this study and their institutions are listed in the appendix at the end of this paper.

We compared plasmapheresis with conventional therapy in 245 patients with the Guillain-Barré syndrome of recent onset. Statistically significant differences, favoring the plasmapheresis group, were found in terms of improvement at 4 weeks, time to improve one clinical grade, time to independent walking, and outcome at 6 months. Plasmapheresis was not effective for all patients, but was particularly effective for patients who received this treatment within 7 days of o and f patients who required mechanical ventilation after entry into the study. Plasmapheresis appears to be of benefit in patients with Guillain-Barré syndrome of recent onset.

Address correspondence and reprint requests to Dr. McKhann, Department of Neurology, Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, 600 North Wolfe Street, Baltimore, MD 21205.

Supported by grant NS 17053-03 from the National Institutes of Health and by the Charles A. Dana Foundation.

Presented in part to the American Neurological Association, Baltimore. October 1984, and at the First International Meeting on Hemapheresis, Dijon, France, November 1984.

Accepted for publication April 29, 1985
