A 32-year-old woman presenting with a rapidly progressive ALS-like syndrome was found to be HIV positive with a CD4 count of 44/mm3. The patient recovered completely during 1 year after treatment with nelfinavir, zidovudine, and lamivudine, and recovery is sustained nearly 4 years later. Recovery was accompanied by HIV RNA becoming undetectable in plasma and CSF.
