In explaining the pathogenesis of cerebral infarction
following snake bite, Mosquera et al suggest a
procoagulant effect of the venom and toxic angiitis of intracranial
vessels as the cause for cerebral infarction [1]. Sarafotoxin
in snake venom has vascular toxic effects leading to
vasospasm particularly in the coronary vessels [2]. Myocardial infarction
following snake bite has been reported, and sarafotoxins are implicated in
such situations [3]. Sarafotoxin-like peptides in the
venom of Bothrops spp. may contribute to cerebral infarction in a similar manner as the pathogenesis of myocardial infarction.
