Announcing Neurology® Assistant Editor Positions
José G. Merino, MD, FAAN, Editor-in-Chief; Olga Ciccarelli, MD, PhD, FRCP, Deputy Editor; and Bradford B. Worrall, MD, MSC, FAAN, Deputy Editor for Editorial Education and Associate Editor, Neurology® are delighted to issue a request for applications for our Assistant Editor program. This program is designed for early to mid-career faculty at academic neurology departments anywhere in the world and provides a mentored editorial experience for capable and motivated individuals.
Over the course of program, the Assistant Editors will be mentored by the Associate Editor responsible for the manuscript’s topic area and by Dr. Worrall. The Assistant Editors will review submitted manuscripts, evaluate their appropriateness for the journal, make triage decisions, select potential reviewers, appraise the reviews, make recommendations to the Editor-in-Chief about papers that are suitable for revision, shepherd revised manuscripts back through the review process, suggest editorialists for key papers, and work on short-form articles, infographics, and editorials. As the Assistant Editors gain experience and confidence, they will have graduated autonomy and expansion of responsibilities. We have designed this program both to cultivate talent and to expose individuals to the academic editorial process earlier in their careers than has traditionally been done. It is expected that the Assistant Editor will spend on average 4-6 hours per week on these duties, including a weekly phone conference with the editorial team. A stipend will be provided.
The position is open to neurologists who are faculty in an academic department anywhere in the world, regardless of subspecialty, but particular consideration will be given to those with expertise in neuroimmunology or cognitive neurology and dementia due to the current volumes of submitted manuscripts in these areas. We are also looking for individuals with a background in neuroepidemiology, neurogenetics, neuroimaging, neuropathology, neuropharmacology, neuropsychology, neurovirology, or biomarkers.
There are two Assistant Editor positions, both requiring a one-year commitment beginning April 1, 2023. Applications are due December 15, 2022, and applicants considered suitable for the position will be invited to review a manuscript as part of the competitive application process. Successful applicants will be notified by early March.
Applicants should submit:
- Statement explaining why they are interested in the position and how participation in the program fits within their career goals
- Two letters of reference
- Letter of support from their Department Chair
- Curriculum vitae
