  • Neurology Journals Null Hypothesis Collection

Publication bias is a well-known issue among scientists and clinicians. Research waste is very much in focus among funders and the scientific community, and one of the factors contributing to this wastage is the nonpublication of negative data; that is, data that do not support the initial hypothesis.

The Neurology journals have partnered with the Center for Biomedical Research Transparency (CBMRT) a not-for-profit organization aiming to promote and facilitate transparent reporting of biomedical research by ensuring that all biomedical results–including negative and inconclusive results–are accessible to researchers and clinicians in the interests of full transparency and research efficiency. By providing an online Null Hypothesis Collection, a dedicated home for well conducted negative, inconclusive or replication studies, we aim to contribute to a research reporting culture where hypotheses and study quality can be equally viewed, whether the null hypothesis is rejected or not.

The American Academy of Neurology (AAN), Neurology, and AAN members are enhancing research culture and opportunities for researchers to reach scientists and clinicians with their findings. Together we can all promote a more balanced and complete publication culture. For more on this collaborative initiative, we invite you to read the first edition of Neurology Null Hypothesis, which was published on April 30, 2019, and our original call for "negative" outcome studies.

  • Call for Null Hypothesis Submissions

CBMRT Null Hypothesis LogoWe encourage you to read, cite and contribute your research to this important ongoing initiative. By so doing, together we acknowledge that good science encompasses more than positive data outcomes; that null data address publication bias and better inform research design. Papers should be submitted to the Neurology submission website, NPub.org/submit under the category "Null Hypothesis."
