Neurology: Clinical Practice Editor Search
We invite applications for the position of Editor of Neurology® Clinical Practice (NCP). The position becomes available in December 2021 when the term ends for Editor John R. Corboy, MD.
NCP is an official journal of the American Academy of Neurology. The journal is aimed at clinical neurologists and other practitioners and it aims to enhance career satisfaction and optimize patient care. NCP is a peer-reviewed journal that publishes articles to inform clinical neurology practice including research articles, reviews, and commentaries on clinical topics, practice management, and health policy. The journal is published six times a year.
The Editor has the final responsibility for editorial decisions regarding all content in the journal and, in conjunction with the editorial leadership team and Neurology® staff, developing and implementing the strategic vision for the journal, promoting the journal to the neurology community, and overseeing the peer review process.
Responsibilities of the Editor
- Report to and collaborate with the Editor-in-Chief (José G. Merino, MD, MPhil, FAHA, FAAN) of the journal Neurology and follow the editorial policies of Neurology
- Select and appoint the Deputy Editor, Associate Editors, and Editorial Board members
- Develop and implement the strategic vision for the journal in conjunction with editorial leadership team and AAN staff, including types of manuscripts to publish and development of new or special sections
- Evaluate the scientific rigor and integrity of manuscripts and make final editorial decisions relative to journal content after consideration of reviewers’ and other editors’ comments
- Take responsibility for ensuring the integrity of the peer review process; assign reviewers or assign responsibility to an Associate Editor
- Monitor and ensure timeliness, fairness, thoroughness, and civility of the peer review process
- Analyze journal policies, practices, and performance metrics to improve journal performance and ensure timely publication
- Lead regular team meetings to develop strategies for recruiting, managing, and making decisions on journal content and implementing strategic objectives
- Promote the journal to the neurology community through editorials, social media, and presence at the AAN annual meeting, the exposition booth, and journal-sponsored events
- Lead Editorial Board meetings (once per year at the annual meeting)
- Ensure that journal content is scientifically rigorous, accurate, and reflects the goals and scope of the journal
- Handle issues regarding integrity of research and publishing, including misconduct and unethical or questionable practice
- Provide clear guidelines to authors for preparation, submission, and revision of manuscripts, and clearly communicate editorial policies and standards
- Serve as an ex officio member of the AAN Publications Committee
- Attend the annual Editorial Retreat led by the Editor-in-Chief of Neurology
- Spend on average 5-10 hours per week on these duties, including a monthly phone conference with the editorial team

Note that the successful candidate will be expected to collaborate with the NCP editorial team for a six-month overlap period with the current Editor. During this period, the new Editor will appoint the Deputy Editor, Associate Editors, and Editorial Board for the Editor’s term. The Editor will receive a stipend, to be negotiated after selection.
