Neurology Seeking Associate Editor for Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion (DEI)

Merino, MD, FAAN, Editor-in-Chief; Olga Ciccarelli, MD, PhD, FRCP, Deputy Editor; and Bradford B Worrall, MD, MSC, FAAN, Deputy Editor for Editorial Education and Associate Editor, Neurology® are delighted to issue a request for applications for an Associate Editor for Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI). The Associate Editor will collaborate with the Editor-in-Chief, staff, and the two current Associate Editors to critically evaluate manuscripts to ensure that the content is respectful and affirming to minoritized populations; create training material for editors, reviewers, and authors; and coordinate review of manuscripts for DEI content. We are looking for neurologists from anywhere in the world who have a demonstrated interest and passion for furthering greater DEI initiatives. A background in healthcare disparities is a plus.
Responsibilities
- Collaborate with other DEI editors to develop educational materials for reviewers, authors, and editors
- Handle a high volume of reviews with timely turnaround
- Check manuscripts assigned at least weekly
- Coordinate peer review of manuscripts by peer reviewers from different population perspectives as needed
- Participate in regular conference calls, Editorial Board meetings, and annual strategic retreats for the journal
- Collaborate with the current Associate Editors, DEI, to provide a brief yearly report that will be discussed at the Neurology Editorial Board Meeting presentation at Annual Meeting. If you attend the AAN’s Annual Meeting, you will be invited to this Board Meeting.
Selection and Appointment
- The Editor-in-Chief, after consultation with the current DEI Associate Editors and other editors, will evaluate the neurologist candidates and recommend the appointment of the selected candidate to the AAN Board of Directors.
- Competencies include being a strong leader, team contributor, and effective manager, possessing excellent time management skills, respecting confidentiality, being effective at resolving misunderstandings, being a firm decision-maker, having ability to promptly and effectively follow through on decisions, ensuring consistency and correctness of published content, being an exceptional reviewer and having the ability to identify excellent reviewers, and having the ability to effectively partner with Neurology staff and colleagues.
It is expected that the Associate Editor will spend on average 5-10 hours per week on these duties. A nominal stipend will be provided.
