Neurology: Clinical Practice’s options for OA publishing (adapted from Baskin PK & Gross RA, Embracing open access publishing: A new era for Neurology. Neurology 2013;80:2-4):
Gold OA for authors who choose open access. Authors (including authors of commercially sponsored papers) may choose to have articles published in final form as OA. Authors must sign a license-to-publish (LTP) form (when prompted by the editorial office) giving the publisher the right to publish the article, create derivatives, and sell reprints. The authors retain the copyright and anyone can use the article for non-commercial purposes with proper attribution to Neurology: Clinical Practice as the original publisher. Each author will sign a license that will give him/her the rights outlined in the Creative Commons: Attribution-Non Commercial-No Derivatives (CC BY-NC-ND) License. This license does not permit commercial exploitation or the creation of derivative works without specific permission. Additionally, all authors who choose the OA option will have their final published article deposited into PMC. An article processing charge (APC) of $3200 per article.
Gold OA for funders with open access mandates. Authors funded by Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, UKRI (formerly known as RCUK), Swedish Research Council, Wellcome Trust/ COAF Partners, or National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) [UK], are required to publish OA and must sign an LTP form giving the publisher the right to publish the article. The authors retain copyright but anyone may reuse the article and create derivatives, even for commercial purposes, with proper attribution to Neurology: Clinical Practice as the original publisher. Authors will be required to publish, as per funding mandates, under the Creative Commons: Attribution (CC-BY) License. Authors/funders must pay an APC of $4000.
It is the responsibility of the Corresponding Author to inform the editorial office and/or WK that they are required to follow the funder’s open access mandates. With both options, all authors will continue to sign Publication Agreement Forms at provisional acceptance. As stated, the authors will retain the copyright.
Open Access Payment and Customer Service
At Final Acceptance, the Corresponding Author will receive an email from publicationservices@copyright.com with the subject line “Please Submit Your Open Access Article Publication Charge(s).” Payment should be made promptly to ensure timely publication with an “OPEN” icon and license-to-publish wording included. Please Note: The open access payment platform is managed by Wolters Kluwer Health, publisher of Neurology; The Editorial Office cannot assist with open access payment questions.
Please send all inquiries related to the Open Access APC to OA-Support@wolterskluwer.com.
Self-archiving: Authors of Neurology Journals articles may not include the final peer-reviewed manuscript or any other version of the article in any commercial site or in any repository owned or operated by any third party unless approval is given from the Neurology Editorial office (However, if approval is provided, the manuscript cannot be deposited until 12 months from article publication). The publisher is responsible for the deposit of the final article.
Creative Commons License Adjustment Policy
Neurology: Clinical Practice does not permit a change in Creative Commons license type after publication; be thorough in the review of any funding entity and their licensing requirements.
APC Refund Policy
The publisher is committed to completing the production process for open access articles in a timely manner. Articles will be held until permissions, author corrections, author forms, or other required information is received. If the article is withdrawn, authors may apply to the Publisher for a refund of the APC within 30 calendar days. The amount refunded is dependent upon the position of the article in the production process.
