Open Access Neurology: Genetics FAQ
Neurology® Genetics Open Access FAQ updated November 20, 2017
What is Open Access?
Open access (OA) is the practice of providing unrestricted access via the Internet to peer-reviewed scholarly research. Open access journals provide 'gold' OA, meaning immediate OA to all of the articles on the publisher's website. ‘Gold’ OA for individual articles is funded by authors (or their author's institution or funders) who pay an OA publishing fee or article processing charge (APC).
What costs does the APC cover?
As costs are involved in every stage of the publication process, from peer review to copyediting and hosting the final article on dedicated servers, authors will be asked to pay an APC in order for their article to be published OA. By paying the APC, authors can post the final, published PDF of their article on a website, institutional repository or other free public server, immediately on publication.
When do authors pay the APC?
To ensure timely publication, authors should be prepared to initiate payment of the APC via the payment site within 5 business days after acceptance. Credit card and “Bill Me” options are available for author, funding agency or institution. Customer support for the payment site is: 1-800-638-3030 (US) or 1-301-223-2300 (outside the US).
Who retains copyright of the OA articles?
Authors retain copyright for their articles, with content licensed under several Creative Commons licenses. Authors may publish under the following licenses:
• Attribution-NonCommercial-NoDerivatives: CC BY-NC-ND. This is an OA article distributed under the terms of the Creative Commons Attribution-Noncommercial No Derivative License, which permits downloading and sharing the work provided it is properly cited. The work cannot be changed in any way or used commercially. All authors will have their final published article deposited into PMC. Please note: Current article processing charges (APCs).
• Attribution: CC-BY. This is an open access article distributed under the terms of the Creative Commons Attribution License, which permits unrestricted use, distribution, and reproduction in any medium, provided the original work is properly cited. Authors funded by Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, RCUK, Swedish Research Council, Telethon Italy, National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) [UK], or Wellcome Trust/COAF Partners are required to publish under the Creative Commons: Attribution (CC-BY) License.
